Asphalt shingles are the most normally used kind of roof covering for pitched roofs. The overlapping design of their fitting directs water downward from one shingle to the next to the edge of the roof where generally the system discharges the water to the downspouts. Asphalt shingles, as well known as composition shingles, are so extensively used because of their moderate cost, light weight (compared to wood, slate or tile), their durability and easiness of installation. In installations, the ordinary shingles are overlapped to produce a whole roofing weight of about 240 pounds per roofing square. The shingles are surfaced on the top face with mineral granules to give protection from the elements and an element of fire resistance. The shingles do let moisture to get away from attic areas in vapor form.

One of the most popular forms of roofing materials are asphalt shingles. These come in different price ranges and styles as well as designs, making it difficult to choose the best one.
